What is an Out of Province Inspection in BC?

Under British Columbia Motor Vehicle Safety standards, vehicles registered in another Canadian province, territory, or foreign country must pass an official mechanical safety inspection before an Autoplan broker can issue BC license plates and insurance.

At Lex Auto Solutions on Voyageur Way, our certified technicians carry out an exhaustive bumper-to-bumper evaluation covering every safety-critical mechanical and structural component. If any item falls outside provincial tolerances, we outline the exact repair needed and can perform rectifications in-house so you don’t have to juggle multiple repair shops.

What We Check During Your OPI Inspection

Braking Systems

Rotor/drum runout, pad thickness (minimum friction limits), hydraulic line integrity, and parking brake hold.

Steering & Suspension

Ball joints, tie rod ends, control arm bushings, strut/shock rebound, and wheel bearing play.

Lighting & Signalling

Daytime running lights (DRL), high/low beams, turn signals, brake lights, reverse lamps, and amber side reflectors.

Tires & Wheels

Tread depth measurement across all grooves, absence of sidewall rot/bulges, and proper load/speed ratings.

Glass & Mirrors

Windshield integrity within driver wiper sweep, side mirror stability, and rear-view mirror compliance.

Body, Frame & Undercarriage

Structural corrosion check, floor pan integrity, subframe mount condition, and absence of road-drag hazards.

Powertrain & Fuel Systems

Exhaust leaks ahead of catalytic converter, fuel tank strap security, fuel line seals, and fluid leak checks.

Safety Restraints & Airbags

Seat belt retractor lockup, buckle latching, and zero active SRS/airbag warning lights on dash.

Most Common Reasons Vehicles Fail Their Initial OPI

Save time and avoid re-inspection fees by checking these high-frequency failure points before arriving:

Daytime Running Lights (DRL) not activating on US-market imports
Excessive dark aftermarket tint on front driver & passenger side windows
Worn brake friction material below mandatory minimum thickness
Exhaust manifold or downpipe leaks ahead of tailpipe
Worn ball joints, torn CV boots, or excessive tie-rod play
Windshield cracks directly in the driver’s primary line of vision
